GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
House Passes Bankruptcy Bill

On March 19, 2003 the House passed its Bankruptcy Reform bill, HR975, by a margin of 315-113.

The vote represents the largest margin of support for the bill in the House. It was a bi-partisan effort, with 90 Democrats joining 225 Republicans in voting for the bill. House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) continued stewardship of the bill.

This year's reform bill is identical to last year's carefully crafted conference report, without the controversial Schumer/Hyde language on abortion clinic violence that ultimately doomed the effort.

AFSA is now focused on passing the bill in the Senate. The existing House bill could move directly to the Senate to save time. The last week in March, 11 Democratic Senators signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, expressing their support for quick action on bankruptcy reform.

While bankruptcy reform is among many key issues that have taken a back seat to the war, AFSA continues to work on it as a top priority. As progress is made, we will keep you posted.
