AFSA 100 Day Tracker | Carson Confirmed to Head HUD March 02, 2017 WHAT HAPPENED Today, the Senate confirmed Dr. Ben Carson to become secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with a vote of 58-41. A few Democrats, including Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Mark Warner (D-Va.), joined the Republicans in support of the nominee. WHAT IT MEANS TO AFSA MEMBERS Carson’s view of fair lending is likely to be different than the previous administrations. Last year, he penned an op-ed for the Washington Times in response to a HUD rule on fair housing. Carson wrote, “These government-engineered attempts to legislate racial equality create consequences that often make matters worse. There are reasonable ways to use housing policy to enhance the opportunities available to lower-income citizens, but based on the history of failed socialist experiments in this country, entrusting the government to get it right can prove downright dangerous.” WHAT IS AFSA DOING Carson is planning a countrywide listening tour. If AFSA members involved in mortgage origination and servicing would like AFSA staff to contact his team, please let us know.
