Ashburn Selected to Lead AFSAEF in Critical Time for Financial Education

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 16, 2017) - The American Financial Services Association Education Foundation (AFSAEF) is pleased to announce the hiring of Rhonda Paul Ashburn as its new executive director. She joins AFSAEF from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling® (NFCC®) and will oversee all aspects of the AFSAEF, including its leadership development programs, and the popular MoneySKILL® premier online personal finance education curriculum, which now has more than 700,000 users in all fifty states.

Ashburn succeeds Susie Irvine, who established the Foundation in 1995 and retired in August, leaving a profound impact on the importance of financial literacy.

“We are very fortunate to have someone with Rhonda Ashburn’s experience in financial education join AFSAEF and continue to build upon the mission of encouraging financial literacy among all Americans,” said Chris Stinebert, President & CEO of the American Financial Services Association.

Most recently, Ashburn served as the Senior Director of Financial Education Programs for the NFCC. While there, she was tasked with the development, launch, and ongoing implementation of Sharpen Your Financial Focus® (Sharpen), a three-step program assisting consumers in stabilizing their personal financial situations through financial education. During Ashburn’s tenure, the program had over 68,000 individuals and families enroll and millions of consumers take action.

Before joining NFCC, she served as the Director of Development with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). While at FCCLA from 1987 to 2011 she established and maintained ongoing engagement with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, corporations, and other individuals/groups with strong commitments to financial education and youth leadership development.

Ashburn has worked extensively creating nonprofit/for profit partnerships especially in the financial education arena and serves in various leadership capacities including the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy Board and she has also served on the Experian Consumer Council, which partners industry experts, nonprofits, and consumers together to increase insight into consumer’s needs, key issues, and education on financial literacy.

She holds a Bachelor of Science, Home Economics Education and Community Services degree from Oklahoma State University and a Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate from the Georgetown University Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership.
